I bought this book in an antiquarian bookshop, being unavailable in the libraries close. It was the book cited by the protagonist of the film "A Single Man" Tom Ford. For some reason struck me. Me are procured and are not repentant.

The novel is set in Los Angeles, referring to Beverly Hills (translated here as" Beverly Hills ") and Hollywood . begins with the arrival in Los Angeles Pordage of Jeremiah, an English scholar at the invitation of a wealthy tycoon, Beppe Stoyte, to file an older archive of a noble English family.
Beppe Stoyte really is not interested culture. It only serves to show its enormous wealth. Other characters, not secondary, are Pete, the innocent victim of jealousy Slyte and propter, the philosopher who lives in a simple and independent. These are the conversations between Pete and propter, and above all the long speeches propter walking the novel in part philosophical. The philosophy is a propter true Stoic philosophy: "liberation from the personality, liberation from time and desire, freedom in union with God." At the end of the novel it seems the bad outweighs the good: there is murder is not punished and that the guilty get away. But propter would say that this is irrelevant: the evil part of man, and as long as man fails to state the plan of the animal and that of spirituality (as opposed to the plan of humanity), there will be nothing to do and Pete's death, in general terms of human life she is just an accident.

The text is very fluid, with some slowness in the "philosophical". Beautiful letter which Jeremiah wrote to his mother, which gives us an interesting picture of the Oedipal relationship, accepting and aware, indeed proudly claimed (Part II, chap. 1). Carry only the final of the letter, but would be worth the pana to read it all:
"Well, I have nothing to say, as I used to write when I was in school - and in large print, remember? in an effort to make the words fill a half page notebook. I have nothing else to say except, of course, the unspeakable, and what I leave unsaid because you already know. "
It 's a nice phrase for this concluding note.

Characters:

The word "incompetence" to life is one that best expresses the character of the characters and featuring the novel: not so much ineptitude as an inability to confront and overcome tragic events, but simply as an inability to express their feelings in an authentic manner and to oppose the mysterious force that seems to force them to live in lies and deception in the car (shown here a clear reference to the "will" of Schopenhauer).

Perhaps Baruch (the name means, in both Hebrew and Portuguese, "blessed") was actually destined for a career as a rabbi. At seventeen, however, was forced to interrupt their studies. The book tries to answer the question of why Spinoza was proclaimed to a Cherem (contract) so hard, the hardest ever issued by the rabbis of the Jewish community of Amsterdam. It discusses the philosophical positions of Spinoza, in relation to works written by the rabbis of religious Amsterdam, the production of Maimonides and Gersonides, the most influential Jewish philosophers. The key point that emerges and explains that, in light of the arguments of the author, the hardness of Cherem , is the question of the immortality of the soul and its survival after death, definitely denied by Spinoza. This denial, although in a different context could be tolerated, as it is not part of the dogmas of the Jewish religion, in particular political situation of Dutch Jews who fled persecution in Spain, many of them former conversos ( ex forcibly converted to Catholicism) and, therefore, timorosi di scontentare le autorità olandesi, apparve scandalosa e intollerabile. Spinoza diventa un caso emblematico, per cui la sua negazione dell'immortalità dell'anima deve essere punita in modo esemplare. Ma lasciamo parlare l'Autore che, nella parte finale, sintetizza con chiarezza i motivi di un bando così duro:
"Solo, il bando di Spinoza ... è particolare: è il più violento e collerico mai pronunciato dai chachamin di Amsterdam. E ciò per una ragione precis, come ho cercato di mostrare, ossia perché una certa tesi di Spinoza era davvero intollerabile. Oltre a negare la paternità mosaica del Pentateuco, oltre a sostenere che Dio esiste only in a philosophical sense, Spinoza denied the immortality of the soul. And the Jews of the seventeenth century Amsterdam was not the place to do it. "
Interesting also pp. 178-185 on the use of hope and fear on the part of religious institutions (as well as political ones) to control and keep at bay the faithful and subjects.
